Deep purple and Rainbow frontman Ritchie Blackmore has taken a strong stand against modern popular music.

The 79-year-old guitarist recently shared a three-minute video of himself playing contemporary acts and said none of them compare to older music.

The video, titled Tales from the Tavern by Blackmore, was posted YouTube.

He discusses what he means when he says he likes old music Real old – like the 1400s and 1500s.

‘I’m clearly not listening to the radio in America where they play the latest thing, whatever it is,” Blackmore said.

“I suppose as we move forward and change generations, I can’t imagine what they would play on the radio. And I don’t listen to rock ‘n’ roll that much anymore. I listen to the old rock from the ’50s, when it was still fresh – Elvis PresleyScotty Moore plays James Burton with Ricky Nelson, The Everly Brothers, I love all that stuff. Buddy Holly was my favorite at the time.”

He went on to say that he is aware that each new generation looks down on the music of the next, and he probably sounds grumpy when he complains about pop music.

But that didn’t stop him from continuing: ‘I feel like in the ’70s, when Eric Clapton was playing Cream and stuff like that, it was thoughtful music. You were listening to White Room or something, you didn’t need that (makes drum noise). You didn’t need to hear that (drum beat).”

He then got more specific about the type of modern music he doesn’t like, calling out Taylor Swift by name.

He said, “From my point of view, I don’t hear good music. It may be good music, but it’s not something I want to hear. When the whole family gets in the truck and we go on vacation, which is probably about 20 miles away, because I don’t like traveling, all I might hear is Taylor Swift or something.”

He went on to say that while he knows it’s normal for the newest generation to have different tastes, that won’t stop him from continuing to complain.

Blackmore is perhaps best known as a member of the rock band Deep Purple, which first formed in 1968 and consisted of vocalist Rod Evans, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, bassist Nick Simper, keyboardist Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice.

When they released their debut album Shades of Deep Purple the same year, they saw success in the industry Americaand reached number four on Billboard’s Hot 100 with a cover of Joe South’s song Hush.

However, their upward trajectory did not continue and their self-titled second album saw low sales.

However, in 1971 the band underwent a transformation. In addition to recruiting a new vocalist, Ian Gillan, and bassist Roger Glover, they adopted a heavier sound and leaned into the world of rock.

In the years since, the band has seen four different line-ups and an eight-year hiatus, but since then they have released 23 studio albums, the most recent in 2021, and are considered one of the ‘most influential bands ever’. according to Planet Rock.
